Salute to Sophocles for being able to produce such a dramatic play, Oedipus Rex. At first, I found this play boring and the language use is quite hard to understand. However, my perception towards this play change when I found out that what happen to Oedipus was actually fated and nothing he could do to change it.
Have you ever imagined yourself killed your own father and later got married with your own mother and have child? People will say that you are the most evil human on earth. Well, that is what happen to Oedipus and surprisingly, we don’t hate him for what he had done. In fact, we as readers feel empathy towards him for the fate that he could not avoid. Well done to Sophocles because he managed to get the sympathy from the readers towards Oedipus with his genius brain in his beautiful language.
What is fated to us can never be faded away. This is what I learn from this tragic play and it really helps me to understand more about life, love and fate. As human being, there is no way for us to avoid fate. We can only make plans but God will be the one who decides everything. In Islamic point of view, we have to believe in “qada’ and qadar”. It means that we have to accept the God’s plans because He knows better than anyone else. We must accept it with an open heart and believe that what is fated to us is actually the best thing that could happen in our life.
What happen to Oedipus is actually happening to all of us but not that extreme and tragic. Fate is something that out of our control. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, it will still come to us and there is no other way to run away. The best thing that we can do is learn to accept it and find the truth meaning in it.

ReplyDeletewhat if Oedipus could change his own fate? or someone tried to avoid the fate?? i mean, if his parents ignored the prophecies, what do think would happen to him? would he kill his father and marry his mother? i don't think so. you know what, because Oedipus was left at lone at the foothills and the King of Polybus adopted him as his son, Oedipus tend ignored other people. that was why, he didnt know that he has killed King Laius which was actually his father. he stated that whoever blocked his way would be killed. he didn't know who the hell that person.
ReplyDeletethe mother, the "unspeakable mother!" did she concern about her baby??not at all! she hoped the baby would die and yet turned to be his husband and father for her children.
Afterall, should we blame on Oedipus 100% just because of the prophecies?????
i'm quite disagree with ms n3lly-n!ghtly...yes,Oedipus life was fated but we are not talking about the prophecies here..we take this situation as example, does a child to a robbery will grow up to be like his father..the possibly maybe there, but, if we educate him properly and teach him about morale values,i don't think that he will inherit his father job.
ReplyDeletein oedipus's case, he turned to be a king who full of himself..he did not concern about other feeling. take a look how he humiliated Tiresias and Creon by accusing them to usurp his throne..and how proud he was when he told the people of Thebes that he can solve all the chaos just because he was a King..
The pride and proud of Oedipus behavour are not inherited to him as a legacy from his descendants but, it comes from himself...
i must say here, something fate can be changed.in oedipus's case, he reluctant to change, and what he got at the end of the play was kind of karma.
mr rohaizan frantic- what did i mean was; do we could change the fate? you said yes. then, what would it be if Oedipus changed his fate? or his parents did so???

ReplyDeletewoww... it's kind of "hot" here...
ReplyDeletemy dear Mr. Rohaizad frantic and Ms. Nelly-nightly, thank you so much for your concern on my post.
Literature is subjective. It means that everyone has their own ways on how they look at it. I totally respect on both of your views in this play as there is no right and wrong in literature.
We may have different views but that does not mean that we have to fight. I agree to the point that what happen to Oedipus has actually fated since the day he was born. Also, it is because of his pride and proud as human being can be. In this case, there is no one to be blamed. It is unfair to blame Oedipus 100%. It is fate who brings all these tragedies to happen but can we blame fate??? I don’t dare to answer that..
Regards to both of you.
hehehe...it's getting hot in here..thanks to the moderator of this blog ...
ReplyDeletewe couldn't blame our fate..we are not watching..fate is written since we was born and everybody has their own fate and destiny..
but,it doesn't mean that we should let the fate to overtake or conquer our life..something must be done to get rid of it especially when it comes to the bad fate..
once again,in Oedipus..i totally agree that his life was fated to be that way..BUT, i believe if he could make an initiative to change his fate, those tragic tragedies will not occur on his life..i say it through my point of view..
we are not watching cerekarama here which the fate of each characters were destined by the storyline and the director...we shouldn't see thing on it's surface only...
Thank you for your reply Mr. Rohaizad...
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I don’t want to add more but I have to say this...
You were saying that Oedipus has put less effort to change his fate. Am I right? Well, I have to say that I disagree with your point. Why? Oedipus has tried his best to stop the fate. He ran away from Corinth for one purpose - he does not want to harm his parents who are actually his adopted parents. He does not know that he was adopted. Things will change if only he knows that he was adopted but the adopted parents refused to tell him the truth.
So, is it fair to blame him all??? Oedipus knows what is fated for him. He actually tried the best he can to stop all the prophecies to happen but human are powerless over fate. It is proven on him that no matter how hard you try to escape; fate will always come knocking your door.
By the way, thanks again for your concern. It is just my opinion. Peace!!!
